Professor Kenneth Stevens is a pioneer in the science and engineering of speech acoustics, production, perception and processing. His work has encompassed the acoustic and perceptual bases of phonological units in language and the physics of laryngeal behavior and larynx modes. The resulting body of knowledge has contributed to widely used criteria for low bit-rate transmission of speech, digital speech coders, computer synthesis and automatic recognition of speech.
